A year ago I ran the Fifth Third River Bank Run, my first 25k. Today I could have ran my second, but passed on the opportunity to hurt myself. I slipped off my training schedule a couple months ago due to illness and decided not to force the issue. Sure, I would have loved to be condition to run the BIG race today, but instead I got a rare opportunity to pace my friend through his first 5K.
At this time last year, I had just completed a first-person weight-loss series for my newspaper and had public pressure on my shoulders to run that 25k as fast as I could. This year I was happily snapping pictures with my phone while running next to the guy who helped me slim down. This year it wasn’t about me and that was pretty refreshing.
