I’ve lived long stretches in my life in fast forward, rushing from one project to the next. Thankfully, the older I get, the more I appreciate the concept of slowing down and taking a break every once in a while.
Last week I met a talented quilter who will be featured in one of my upcoming craft columns and I was inspired by her piecework. Today I got some time to try it out myself, and what fun! It’s so precise, quiet and relaxing. It’s the yoga of quilting.
This is a great way to use up little bits of fabric and make something great.
I used paper templates to create the flower appliqué above. I basted fabric around the paper, joined the petals together on two sides, pressed with my iron, removed the basting stitches and then sewed to a piece of muslin. I LOVE this. Hand sewing is so underrated.

I ordered some paper templates from Paper Pieces in Sycamore, Ill. and can’t wait to start creating with those. I’ll be organizing a workshop soon at the Y, so all you West Michigan folks stay tuned!
