Many others have crafted since, but Carol Duvall was among the very first to craft before a live television audience.

One of her hallmarks was her uncanny ability to teach television viewers how to whip up interesting projects using items they could find around the house. From finding creative purposes for the old plastic L'eggs pantyhose "egg" containers and milk cartons to other household goods, Carol never seemed to run out of ideas.

While crafting became Carol's claim to fame during a television career that lasted more than 50 years, that was not her intention.

Tune in this week to hear the story of how a working mom who never aspired to be the "Queen of Crafting" became just that.

Carol's television career began in Grand Rapids on Oct. 19, 1951 and led her to Detroit where she become the much adored host of "Here's Carol Duvall." She continued crafting on ABC's "The Home Show" during the late 1980s and became the host of "The Carol Duvall Show," which aired on the Home and Garden Television network for a decade beginning in 1994. Carol is no longer taping new shows, but you can watch old episodes on hgtv.com and on the Do-It-Yourself network.

Carol is retired and enjoying life with a lovely view of Lake Michigan from her home in Bear Lake, Mich., and she's still crafting. She asked that I not publish her age, but I can say she was about my age when she launched her TV career. She looks fabulous and is a fine example of what a long and happy life of crafting can do for a woman. Thanks for inspiring so many of us to take what we have on hand and make something cool.

This week's project is a PDF download of Carol Duvall's Craft Letter Issue #10, Volume 8 from October 1978. This is one issue of the monthly newsletter she mailed to subscribers across the country.
