Like many fans of Craigslist Missed Connections, Korey Schnell is highly amused by the often ridiculous posts composed by people who feel like they missed out on a love connection and are hoping for a second chance.
What separates, Schnell, 26, of Grand Rapids, from most other Missed Connections readers, is that he uses the often ridiculous posts as artistic inspiration. About a year ago, Schnell, who works in the furniture industry, started illustrating his favorite Missed Connections with quick pen sketches and began posting them on his GR_Missed Connections Instagram feed with the unedited text from the original Craiglist post. Schnell, a Ferris State University grad originally from Bay City, says he purposely only spends about 15 minutes on each sketch in an effort to match the hasty style of the text he’s illustrating.
Perhaps the most entertaining aspect of Schnell’s work is his uncanny ability to take a seedy sounding Craigslist post and flip it 180 degrees by pairing it with a more wholesome, interpretative sketch overflowing with satire. Schnell just published his first zine containing 10 of his visual interpretations of Craigslist ads. Copies are available via his Etsy shop and Bombadil Books, 315 Division Ave. S., in Grand Rapids.
