Here’s a little peek at the ceramic buttons and pins that I made the other day after an inspiring family visit to Jeff Rottman’s Studio 6th B in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I’ll post another photo after the pieces are fired so you can see how everything turned out. I’m not very good at visualizing how glazes will look after they’re fired, so I struggle a bit to establish a nice color pallet and it all feels very experimental.
After interviewing Jeff R. for my weekly newspaper column, I went to his studio to take photos and ended up bringing my family back on Monday for a quick studio session. My husband (Jeff H.) and I helped the girls make coil pots and then we made a super fast pie plate before he rushed off to work. The kids even had a blast with the clean-up portion of the event when they got to pile up all the clay.
It’s been a while since my last pottery class, so I really appreciated having Jeff R. standing by to make everything look pretty in the end. Check back Friday for the big reveal. (I’ll be doing a basic pottery demo on WZZM’s “Take Five & Co.” Friday morning, too. And read Sunday’s edition of The Grand Rapids Press for the full story of how Jeff R. became an artist and developed his Dutch Lake Pottery dinnerware line.
In the meantime, if you’re local and looking for a fun project to create with your valentine, sign up for Jeff R.’s Valentine’s Day-themed event for couples who want to make a piece of pottery together. Here are the details:
