Even, Juna, our Alaskan Malamute who loves to nap outside on a snow pile, is hunkered down inside today. It's too cold to go out, so it's a great day to grab your favorite blanket and settle into to a cozy chair and listen to a podcast.

Today, I offer up a great conversation with Samara O'Shea, the wordsmith who writes custom letters for clients over at letterlover.net and the author of "For the Love of Letters: A 21st-Century Guide to the Art of Letter Writing." Samara's approach is wonderful in that she didn't write a straight how-to guide. She mixed in her own letter-writing adventures and really made the book come to life.

So please tune in to find out how this 28-year-old writer made the jump from magazine writing to become a personal letter writer and published author. (You can read more about Samara in the story I wrote about letter writing for The Grand Rapids Press.)

<img class="imageStyle" alt="bookcover" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry72_2.jpg"width="120" height="159"/>
WIN THE BOOK! Be sure to enter this week's contest to win one of two copies of Samara's book. Anne's plan is to take the names and incorporate them into a traveling tote bag that the stitchers will each get a chance to use as they go about their lives for a week or so. The response was so overwhelming that Anne got enough volunteers to make two tote bags. I got in on the second bag.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="zzgabbard_marilyn_l.JPG" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry9_3.jpg"width="125" height="200"/>
Marilyn Gabbard is the name I stitched, and now I feel connected to this woman I'll never meet. Almost immediately after opening my letter from Anne, I did the research to find out who she was and when and how she died. I did the research even though I knew it would mean that I was about to get emotionally more caught up in the war (I have no close personal ties to those serving.)

I learned that Marilyn, of Polk City, Iowa, was the first woman promoted to the rank of command Sgt. Major in the Iowa Army National Guard. She had been in Iraq about a month when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter she was traveling in crashed Jan. 20 northeast of Baghdad, killing a dozen soldiers. Marilyn was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother and friend. She was 46.

After speaking with Marilyn's family, I would learn more about her life, making it impossible for me to mail my finished swatch back to Anne and forget. This war feels more personal now. The simple act of tracing a name with thread on a piece of muslin forced me to once again consider the crushing magnitude of what each name on the list represents and the hole it leaves in the hearts of loved ones who must go on without the soldier they loved.

I stitched Marilyn's name in June with turquoise embroidery floss, sitting in the passenger seat while my husband drove my daughters and I to a Lake Michigan beach. It was an odd thing to be stitching the name of a fallen solider on the way to enjoy a vacation day on a hot beach where my daughters would play with sand toys, collect rocks and squeal with delight each time a chilly wave rushed over their toes.

As an American, I enjoy a pretty peaceful existence. But, like many others, I often forget about the cost. On this particular day, I stitched myself a painful reminder that I doubt I'll forget. This episode of CraftSanity will hopefully lead you to consider what you can do to attempt to make sense of the horrors of war. We might not be able to stitch global peace, but we can remember the people who died and support the people who loved them as we continue to try to dream up more sensible ways to work out our differences.

Tune in for a coversation with Anne Landre and Marilyn's stepdaughter, Sherri Gabbard.

This week's project: Download Anne Landre's instructions for transferring text to fabric (PDF). There were mommy bloggers, food bloggers, exhibitionist bloggers, weight-loss bloggers, political bloggers and many other blogging enthusiasts numbering in excess of 750. While I find many blogs fascinating, I went to meet the art and craft bloggers, the people who make stuff and write about it. People, well, like me.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="big sound board" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry10_3.jpg"width="250" height="188"/>
The BlogHer organizers gave me the green light to record a panel discussion called: "The Art of Crafts" on Saturday, so I turned it into a special BogHer edition of the CraftSanity podcast. The audio is straight from the panel discussion sandwiched between an intro and exit by yours truly. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.) From finding creative purposes for the old plastic L'eggs pantyhose "egg" containers and milk cartons to other household goods, Carol never seemed to run out of ideas.

While crafting became Carol's claim to fame during a television career that lasted more than 50 years, that was not her intention.

Tune in this week to hear the story of how a working mom who never aspired to be the "Queen of Crafting" became just that.

Carol's television career began in Grand Rapids on Oct. 19, 1951 and led her to Detroit where she become the much adored host of "Here's Carol Duvall." She continued crafting on ABC's "The Home Show" during the late 1980s and became the host of "The Carol Duvall Show," which aired on the Home and Garden Television network for a decade beginning in 1994. Carol is no longer taping new shows, but you can watch old episodes on hgtv.com and on the Do-It-Yourself network.

Carol is retired and enjoying life with a lovely view of Lake Michigan from her home in Bear Lake, Mich., and she's still crafting. She asked that I not publish her age, but I can say she was about my age when she launched her TV career. She looks fabulous and is a fine example of what a long and happy life of crafting can do for a woman. Thanks for inspiring so many of us to take what we have on hand and make something cool.

This week's project is a PDF download of Carol Duvall's Craft Letter Issue #10, Volume 8 from October 1978. She is a married, mother of five boys who works full-time as a parts manager for a fork lift company. When she's off the clock, Dee is working hard to grow her soap business Bars by Bellini. Like many of us who rush home from our day jobs to work on projects, Dee is pursuing her crafty dream on the side and one day hopes to have a shop where she can sell her handmade soaps, lotions, scrubs, sprays and lip balms.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="deeproducts" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry12_2.jpg"width="319" height="213"/>

I met Dee in December and watched customers flock to her booth at an artist market we both participated in. Her products are wonderful, especially her Goats Milk and Aloe Cream. I was never a chemistry whiz and haven't had a much luck making soap myself, so I decided to take a lesson from a pro. On this episode of CraftSanity, I'm going to take you inside Dee's kitchen where she's going to tell us how she makes her expanding line of soaps and skin products.

So settle in for an audio tour into the world of soapmaking. Throughout the recording, Dee shares many interesting facts about the properties of particular oils and loads of useful information that will be very useful if you want to try this yourself.

I shot video of Dee in action, and will be posting that soon.

Meet Dee: If you're going to be in West Michigan this summer, be sure to look for Dee at the Fulton Street Artisan's Market from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. every Sunday. (She made her debut on episode 27, so be sure to check that out if you missed it.) Amy is still as artistic and crafty as ever, but there have been some major developments since we last heard from her. She just had another baby girl and published her first book, "Bend-the-Rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew." Congrats, Amy!

We taped the interview before Amy went into labor, so you'll have to visit her blog for the latest news from the homefront. We kept our talk pretty craft focused, so don't be surprised if you're inspired to try five new projects by the end of the show. (I've been on a big sewing binge lately and Amy's book is partly to blame for fueling my need to floor my Singer and sew like mad. It's seems I can't wait to get on to the next project.)

Amy is 35 and lives in Portland, Ore., with her husband, Pete, and three daughters. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in interior architecture and landed an impressive job as a commercial interior designer and got to work. But she’s wasn’t feeling it. She was the new girl with purple hair in the office full of corporate types with mustaches. After dying her hair back to a more natural shade, she quickly realized that wasn’t going to change the fact that she would never enjoy meaningless water-cooler small talk. At her core, she could not conform to the norms of the corporate world. It took a few years, but Amy eventually reclaimed an artistic life for herself. She started making art again – jewelry, mono prints, and quilts – and let go of the job that didn’t suit her. (Did I mention that she tells her story very well in episode 27?)

Today she is a 35-year-old artist, wife and mother of three daughters. She showcases her art quilts, prints, paper goods and paintings on her King Pod site and documents her creative life in her "Angry Chicken" craft weblog. Amy also runs Mailorder, a subscription-based, craft activity club that has involved ID cards, merit badges, fake money, secret passwords and decoder rings. She also created Tie One On, that great website that serves as a fantastic gallery of homemade aprons made by enthusiasts all over the globe. Every month she cooks up a new theme and invites participants to make aprons to showcase on the site.

Here are some of Amy's small quilts, followed by her aprons.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="chicken" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_2.jpg"width="108" height="106"/><img class="imageStyle" alt="familyportraitlg" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_3.jpg"width="134" height="114"/><img class="imageStyle" alt="eyepatchlg" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_4.jpg"width="134" height="107"/>

<img class="imageStyle" alt="157634345_f184dfe0c0" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_5.jpg"width="139" height="185"/><img class="imageStyle" alt="135950761_ac62e68f04" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_6.jpg"width="139" height="185"/><img class="imageStyle" alt="186913068_356d7a6cc0" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_7.jpg"width="139" height="185"/>

If you want to know more, check out CraftSanity episode 27 and read her FAQ.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Pasted Graphic" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry13_8.jpg"width="187" height="187"/>
This week's project (again): Amy's a little busy getting to know the newest little member of her family, so I didn't try to shake a new project out of her. My little audio story barely does them justice, but it's something. But listen up, folks, because Julie, 48, of Minneapolis, Minn., has a wonderful story to share.

This week Julie is going to tell us what it's like to be a children's book author and illustrator and even read her book to us. And in the usual CraftSanity fashion, we talk about a bunch of other stuff, too. Take a little audio stroll with us and get inspired for your next creative project. I love it! Julie asked the talented Fiona, of Adelaide, Australia, to make her a Nell doll and she did a great job. Check it out.

I taped my interview with Julie in late 2006, and she's been very busy since we talked. She writes:

"We staged the first production of the KNITTING NELL play in March - with fourteen kindergarten through second graders. We had an absolute riot of a time and, we even had enough boys for the boy roles. We all pitched in and made props, including a tree whose canopy of leaves was made from sculpted thick gauge wire completely covered with multicolored strands and loops of yarn."

Julie is also working on a second book she expects will be out sometime in 2009. On this page you'll find some of her latest illustrations of "wise, angelic children - sort of folky and romanticized. The one with the child and the large flower is loosely associated with the latest story I wrote, called 'To Talk to a Flower.'" She's working with milk-based casein paint that behaves like a combination of gouache and oil. Casein has been around since the early Egyptians, and can now be bought by the tube. If all continues to goes well, Julie says she has plans to try to may her own.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="1" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry14_4.jpg"width="300" height="310"/>

<img class="imageStyle" alt="bk_nell" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry14_5.jpg"width="200" height="217"/>
Win a copy of Julie's darling book! This week I'm giving away a copy of Julie's book "Knitting Nell" to one lucky CraftSantiy listener. When a friend asked her to share a table at the Renegade Craft Fair, she had a reason to execute that shoe idea she had been kicking around for a while. The shoes were hot sellers and the rest is history. Now, Annie, 31, of Chicago makes shoes full-time. To date she has turned out more than 1,000 pairs of cute and comfortable handmade shoes. (These shoes are so great -- I bought a pair myself).

On this episode of CraftSanity, Annie shares the story of the unusual path she has taken to become a crafty shoe designer. (Since we taped this interview, she has continued to grow her business. She recently moved her studio out of her basement and to a creative loft space in Chicago. Also, she reports that her shoes are selling like hot cakes in New Zealand. Way to go Annie!)

You can check out her fabulous designs at mophop.com.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="IMG_1458" src="http://www.craftsanity.com/files//page0_blog_entry18_2.jpg"width="400" height="266"/>

Have any of you made your own shoes?
