A Beautiful Night in Grand Rapids Got Me Thinking…

Thousands of paper lanterns were released into the night sky Friday in downtown Grand Rapids as part of ArtPrize 2012. The entry, by Mark Carpenter and Dan Johnson, resulted in a stunning visual display of flickering lights climbing high above the city and thousands of smiles on the ground. It was lovely. After a very stressful […]

A Little ArtPrize Inspiration

Art That Sticks: Artist Jeremy Tubbs created his ArtPrize entry using five types of duct tape on panel. My daughters and I made a beeline for the opening night of ArtPrize 2011 after school today. They were excited to rush home to pack sack dinners and head downtown. I was excited, too, and actually took the […]

CraftSanity Podcast Episode 121: A Conversation With Betsy Timmer

We’re going to time warp just a tad on this episode of the podcast. We’re going back to a coat closet inside the Grand Rapids Public Art Museum (GRAM) where I interviewed artist Betsy Timmer this past fall about “Rag Rug,” the piece that she entered in ArtPrize, the international art competition held annually here […]

ArtPrize 2010 Video Interview: One Artist’s Dream Collection

I’m a dreamer, canner and collector of bits, bobs and trinkets, so I was delighted to happen upon Heather Holloman’s “Dream Collection” on exhibit at The Grand Rapids Public Museum here in West Michigan. To create her ArtPrize entry, she asked people what they dream about at night then she searched for artifacts to illustrate […]

ArtPrize 2010: Red Thread

The streets of Grand Rapids were packed again yesterday and the city was buzzing with great energy. This is one of the many ArtPrize entries that captivated me on day four of the competition. It’s a large installation by Beili Liu featuring thousands of hand spiraled coils of red thread suspended from the ceiling. In […]

ArtPrize 2010: A Rag Rug Dress

I’m feeling rather fickle as I indulge in the visual feast that is ArtPrize. Each new piece I see becomes my favorite. I’m currently enamored with this “Rag Rug” dress created by Betsy Timmer that is on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM). The piece is made of found sheets, curtains and tablecloths […]

ArtPrize 2010: A Mermaid Made of Toothpicks

In the coming days I will be posting photos of the ArtPrize entries that captivate me in random order. I will also post video clips when I’m able to snag brief interviews with artists. ArtPrize is the international art competition held in Grand Rapids, Mich. More than 1,700 artists have entered and attendees vote to […]

ArtPrize 2010: We’re Off To A Fun Start

I’m backtracking here, but I want to note that Wednesday’s ArtPrize opening reception at the David D. Hunting YMCA was very nice. I would have posted about it sooner, but my Internet service was knocked out by Mother Nature for a couple days. I’ve also been busy soaking up inspiration at ArtPrize with out-of-town guests. […]

Power Ties In Bloom: The Unveiling of My ArtPrize Quilts

Ok, folks. Here they are, the much hyped (by me) quilts that I have been obsessively laboring over for weeks and months in order to get them done the international ArtPrize competition that kicks off tomorrow here in Grand Rapids. I have no plans to win this competition, so the pressure is off now that […]

At Long Last: The Charity ArtPrize Quilts Are Complete

Finishing this quilt project came down to the wire as expected, but boy am I happy to be done. Crossing the finish line was very unceremonious and that was expected, too. I just left the quilts in a pile on a table at the David D. Hunting YMCA and went home. If I had not […]

A Little More Stitching & These Quilts Will Be Done!

I have five days to finish hand stitching the bindings and hanging sleeves on this stack of ArtPrize quilts. Five days until life returns to normal. Almost there… I’m headed out to shoot a photo for next week’s art & craft column. You can read today’s column about Alban Fischer, editor of trnsfr magazine here. […]

Stopping To Smell the Roses & Encourage You To Sign Up For A Sewing Class

Even in the busiest times, while in the thick of the most involved projects it’s important to stop and soak up nature’s wonders. The other day I snapped this picture of a rose past it’s prime but still quite beautiful. It’s so important to pause every now an then, especially when your plate is full […]

I Can See The Finish Line, Folks! …And It’s Still a Few Miles Away

Doodle, doodle almost done. I love scribbling on fabric with thread. I machine quilted panels four and five of my charity ArtPrize quilts late Wednesday. High five, everyone! Later today I’ll be picking out fabric for the binding and weaving in thread tails. I can’t quite believe I’ve been working on this project every day for […]

Ripping Out And Starting Again: Puting A Couple Simplicity Products To The Test Under Deadline Pressure

I finally finished quilting the beast that was panel three of my charity ArtPrize quilt project. I had some thread tension issues in the wee hours of the morning that cost me some valuable time and sleep, but I’m back on track and a little more in tune with my machine. If I’ve learned anything […]

A Minor Setback On The Deadline Quilting Front

It’s 4:18 a.m. Mistakes were made. What can I say? I will resume work after I get some sleep. The quilting is about halfway done on the third of five quilt panels. I can do this. (If you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about, check out my other posts below.)
