If you found a box “filled with yarn or every color,” what would you do?

When this happened to Annabelle, the little girl featured in the new picture book “Extra Yarn” written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen, she decided to knit herself a sweater.

There was extra yarn left over, so she knit a her dog a sweater, too. And so begins a delightful tale of an exuberant knitter and the magic of craft.

After enjoying this lovely book with my daughters, I decided to interview the men who created it, and they did not disappoint. Tune in to CraftSanity Episode 129 to hear my chat with Mac Barnett, 29, and Jon Klassen, 30, about how this book came to be. You can also read the column I wrote about the book in Sunday’s Press and online Monday over on MLive.

Both men live in California and are rising stars in children’s literature. Barnett, of Oakland, has been cranking out picture books including “Billy Twitters and His Blue Whale Problem,” “Guess Again!”, “The Clock Without A Face,” and “Oh No! (Or Home my Science Project Destroyed the World.” He is also the author of the Brixton Brothers mystery series that my 7-year-old daughter just started reading.

Meanwhile, Klassen, who is originally from Canada, lives in Los Angeles where he illustrates children’s books full-time. He is the author and illustrator of “I Want My Hat Back,” a New York Times Best Illustrated book of 2011. He is the illustrator of “Cats’ Night Out” by Caroline Stutson and the middle-grade series “The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place” by Maryrose Wood. Before he started illustrating books, Klassen worked in animation and worked on the stop-motion film, “Coraline” based on the book by Neil Gaiman.

ENTER TO WIN A COPY OF “EXTRA YARN”: What would you do if you found a box of yarn like Annabelle’s? Leave a comment below about what you would make with your extra yarn and enter the random drawing for a free copy of the book. The deadline to enter is Friday, Feb. 24, 2012. Good luck! UPDATE: Jess was selected as the book winner. Congrats, Jess! This was her comment: “This book looks fantastic! If I found a box of yarn, I might knit more cast iron handle cozies for friends. They’re quick and easy and practical! Thanks for the giveaway :)”

I will post more information on my dyeing experiments in a follow-up post. And, in case you’re wondering, the mini-sweater pictured near the top of this post was adapted from the sweater ornament pattern that was published in the first issue of CraftSanity Magazine.

Yesterday I made a last-minute scramble to interview British knit designer Jean Moss via Skype. I had previously agreed to be part of her blog tour for her new book “Sweet Shawlettes: 25 Irresistible Patterns for Knitting Cowls, Capelets and More” and had planned to post a Q&A with her today.

But then I started reading her bio and thought better of it. I wanted to hear her tell her story and thought you might enjoy that, too. It worked out for all of us that Jean has a fun and spontaneous spirit, otherwise I don’t think this podcast would have happened on short notice. (A special thanks to my husband, Jeff, for helping with the speedy turnaround.)

Jean has been a knit designer for 30 years and her career was launched after a chance meeting with one of Ralph Lauren’s agents. What happened next is quite a story that you’ll have to tune in to hear.

Since her big break, Jean has gone on to design for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley and Benetton. She contributes regularly to Rowan Knitting, Crochet Magazine, The Knitter, and Vogue Knitting. She also writes a “Ask Jean” advice column for the U.K. magazine Knitting.

When she’s not knitting, Jean likes to cook, lead tours, garden and sing. And this episode includes a musical treat. We let Jean play us out with her song: “More Yarn Will Do the Trick.”

She has written 10 books and is currently promoting “Sweet Shawlettes” ($21.95 US), a book filled with 25 patterns for beginner and advanced knitters. The patterns are divided into four categories: country, couture, folk and vintage, so there’s a nice variety of projects to pick from.

Lovely photos by Alexandra Grablewski as well as detailed charts and illustrations accompany the written patterns. A helpful “techniques and stitches” section at the back offers knitters additional information to get them clicking away on the projects right away.

When I get my next non-work related knitting break, I want to make the Harlequin Cape, shown on the cover.

I also like the Arabesque Scarf on p. 64. (above) It can be made in two sizes and makes lovely use of the feather and fan stitch pattern.

And while I will probably not get time to knit the challenging leopard print Kitty Capelet on p. 84 anytime soon, it’s very cool and would be fun to sport around town.

I could go on about “Sweet Shawlettes” but I’ll stop here and give you all a chance to win a copy of the book.

ENTER TO WIN: Post a comment below about your favorite stitch or technique and we’ll get you in the random drawing for a copy of “Sweet Shawlettes”. The deadline to enter is Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012. Good luck, everyone!

Hi folks! Today I’m bringing you a new episode of CraftSanity featuring a conversation with Brett Bara, crafter, author, TV host and jello mold enthusiast.

This podcast is part of Brett’s blog tour to promote her new book “Sewing in a Straight Line: Quick & Crafty Projects You Can Make By Simply Sewing Straight.”

I met Brett when she kindly interviewed me for an episode of the PBS show she hosts called “Knit & Crochet Today.” I had no idea then, but that interview turned out to be a pivotal part of my decision to quit my day job. When I watched it roughly a year after we recorded, I was struck by how happy I look talking about CraftSanity. After that, quitting my day job seemed like a no brainer.

At the time Brett was also the editor of “Crochet Today” magazine, but she ended up quitting her day job, too, to pursue her own crafty interests. Tune in to episode 125 to hear Brett tell the story of her creative roots growing up in rural Pennsylvania, moving to New York City and most recently hitting her stride as a Brooklyn-based craft expert. Brett also talks about what inspired her to write a sewing book.

“Sewing in a Straight Line” contains both basic and challenging projects, which makes it appealing to both experienced and rookie sewists. And Brett has gone the extra mile, working with friends to produce three instructional videos to show viewers how to sew a skirt, zippered pillow and a fabric bowl. (The fabric bowl is one of my favorite projects in the book.)

ENTER TO WIN a copy of Brett’s new book! Leave a comment below about your first sewing experience to enter the random drawing for a copy of “Sewing In A Straight Line.” Was your first project a success or disaster? What did you make? Tell us all about it. The deadline to enter is Tuesday Aug. 9, 2011. Good luck!!

**** WINNER UPDATE*** : Julie is the randomly selected winner of a copy of Brett’s book. She posted this comment about her first sewing experience: “My first sewing machine project was a circle skirt for a belly dancing class I was taking. Can you imagine cutting out a giant circle of fabric more than half the length of your body? The sewing went on forever, and was most decidedly NOT in a straight line, and barely followed the curve I’d cut into the fabrick When I’d finished, I tried it on and it was longer on one side than the rest. Luckily, I was resourceful and put the too-long side over my bum, which was bountiful enough to take up the extra length so that the skirt was actuall the same length all the way around when I was actually wearing it. HA!”

Congrats, Julie!

We’re going back to a coat closet inside the Grand Rapids Public Art Museum (GRAM) where I interviewed artist Betsy Timmer this past fall about “Rag Rug,” the piece that she entered in ArtPrize, the international art competition held annually here in West Michigan.

The coat closet wasn’t our first choice of recording locations but we decided it was our best option after we were interrupted by a band that started jamming outside moments after I hit record. We even postponed the interview a day in the hope that we could record in peace, but heavy ArtPrize attendance resulted in lots of chatter and shuffling feet, so into the quiet coat closet we went.

Despite the repeated interruptions and ridiculous interview location, my conversation with Betsy was most enjoyable. Tune in to hear how she created her “Rag Rug” piece that placed in the top 75 of more than 1,700 entries during the 2010 ArtPrize competition, her thoughts about the difference between art and craft, and the challenge of balancing life as a fine artist with the realities of holding a day job.

Betsy is a Michigan native who now lives in Lawrence, Kansas where she works as an adjunct art professor and does freelance graphic design work to support her “art dreams.” (Check out the mop dress she talked about during the podcast here.)

Kansas City listeners can check out Betsy’s latest creative project. She was selected as one of 12 artists selected for the Kansas City Power & Light District “Holiday Windows” competition. Betsy’s display is in the window of Envolve Boutique, 1380 Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The winner is determined by public vote which is ongoing through Dec. 16. The winner will receive $5000. (Good luck, Betsy!)

If you’re an artist of dream of someday becoming one, you’re going to really enjoy Betsy’s story. So pour yourself a cup of tea and settle in for a nice long chat.

These Eco-friendly plush were just featured in Stuffed Magazine!

You may ask yourself, “Why do they only have one eye?” Simple of course. Each plush receives a great big hug from Mary after completion. It’s such a big hug that one of their eyes just pops. Or it could be because she is left handed, She’s also heard it’s because she punches them. Whichever story you choose to believe is up to you o.X
