CraftSanity Episode 84: A Conversation with Knitter Cat Bordhi

cat-bordhi-head-shot.jpg

Cat Bordhi isn’t satisfied with doing things the way they’ve always been done, especially not when it comes to knitting. A curious woman, Bordhi, 57, of Friday Harbor, Wash., uses her inquisitive nature to push the limits and experiment to see what she can create.

The result is a collection of four impressive, knitting books that have established her as an industry expert. From moebius knitting to socks on two circulars, Bordhi is leading todays knitters in exciting new directions and challenging them to take their stitching to the next levelcombinedbook-cat3.jpg

Tune in this week to find out how this Russian Lit major ended up working as a professional artist, teacher author and knitter and how she’s passing the baton by mentoring other knitters interested in self-publishing options.

I interviewed Cat for the podcast and also made her the subject of my weekly art and craft column after I heard that she’s on her way to Grand Rapids, Mich. this week to teach some workshops and sign copies of her books.

Hey local knitters! Here’s your chance to meet Cat!
Cat Bordhi will sign copies of her books from 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at City Knitting, 423 Norwood Ave. SE. Also, there may still be openings in her Wednesday sock workshop. The workshop runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $90. Call 454-9276 to register.

Visit Bordhi’s website, to find out more her books, for free patterns and teaching aids for incorporating knitting into the classroom.

haven’t had time to stop in but been catching up reading your posts the past few days! Love those bags, and meeting Cat would be cool but, lol, would be past my bedtime on a weeknight by the time i got home, lol. Although i could bribe my hubby with Oysters at Elliots before…hmmm, plan forming!

I would love some Spray Paint 4 Fabric for my almost 16 year old daughter who loves to deconstruct and construct her world! Her clothes, her bedroom, her bedding, her shoes, her bags, everything! She’d probably use some on her VW Bus project she’s doing too! Her birthday is in September and I’m hoping her dad and I can get her a sewing machine. She knits, but sewing, painting and drawing are her big things. (I think knitting is too slow for her!) Thanks for the great podcast. I live several islands away from Cat Bordhi, and the interview was fun, educational and inspirational, as yours always are, Jennifer!

This was such a fun podcast! I loved all that Cat had to say-very inspiring. I’m a super beginning knitter so some of the terms were lost on me but I can’t wait to learn more and to keep trying more challenging projects. Since I’m in WA state too I hope she’ll pass through Spokane-I’ll have to check out her schedule.
As for the paint-it looks fun. I would definitely like to stencil designs on all my clothes that I am sick of. Of course I am also highly intrigued by the upholstery paint. It sounds pretty wacky!

I loved listening to this podcast. Cat is such an interesting person. I’ve already downloaded her materials for incorporating knitting in a school curriculum.

I would love some Spray Paint 4 Fabric and want to use it to spice up some old clothing. I have lots of old clothing that just seems BORING after wearing them for so long, so I want to alter them and experiment with this paint!

BTW, love your podcast. Keep it up!

I really enjoyed this podcast with Cat Bordhi! As I listened I managed to knit a gift for my friend and write down some of the books she listed in the podcast. I was suprised to hear her mention Lynn Barr’s book since it already in my collection and I truly love it.

Anyway with the Spray Paint 4 fabric I would use it to spray paint the curtains in my room and to spray paint the curtains I will be putting in front of closet to hide the closet and my clothes behind it. I would also like to use it on my bed spreads and to use it on t-shirs to make tye-dyed effects.

Thanks for another great podcast!

I’m listening to the podcast now, love it! And I have a question. I can’t rewind, heard someone mentioned who lives in Maine, wrote a book, no internet, Lynn someone? Who was that mentioned? I’m very curious. Thanks!

Jennifer,

This was a great podcast. As a teacher I am now wondering if I could teach my 2nd graders to knit. I’m not sure that I am that patient. :) I just finished my first knitting project myself (on my blog).

Thank you so much for your podcast. It puts me in a good mood and I learn so much!

Oddly I didn’t think of using that fabric paint on furniture until I heard it on your show.

Hi Jennifer!

Loved the interview with Cat ~ and I would second the warning that knitting mobiiiiiii can be addictive!

I’m probably too late for the fabric paint, but I think I’d pobably give freezer paper stencils a try on some T-shirts and sweatshirts.

Also, I love the Posted Stitches concept / web site ~ it’s wonderful!!

Thanks, as always, for all your hard work! = } Deb
