Grab a box of markers and a clean sheet of paper, and doodle away while you listen to journal artist Dawn DeVries Sokol share the story of how she got hooked on the art form.
Sokol, 39, of Tempe, Ariz., is the woman who compiled and contributed to the impressive collection of journal art recently published in the book “1,000 Artist Journal Pages: Personal Pages and Inspirations.” This book is filled with inspiring pages by a couple hundred artists that left me itching to start a new art journal myself. (Keep reading to find out how you can enter to win the book.)
Tune in to learn what inspired Sokol to throw herself into art journaling and find out how you can set about the business of filling a Moleskine with your own artwork and words.
This week’s project: Download one of Sokol’s art journal prompts to get you in the mood for journaling. You can find more prompts on her website.

Hey, this new podcast looks great; I can’t wait to listen… I’m not art journaling yet, but I think it’s a cert. I mean, it’s just going to happen, right? I’m a compulsive doodler and I recently made a commitment to draw something – anything – every single day. So art journaling is something I’ve got to try. Thanks for the inspiration! – Bev

Love this!
I have had an art journal since I was about 9 years old. If I don’t draw everyday- even a doodle- I feel less grounded.

I had been an avid journaler up until a couple years ago. Now I just find it hard to fit it in (blogging might have something to do with that). These are journals seem like a natural extension of what I used to do, and the interview really got me thinking about jumping into this more creative way to remember.

Thanks so much for this interview with Dawn. I have to admit that when I heard the subject I was not overly excited. After ten minutes I was hooked! Now I’m ready to journal.

Wonderful podcast! I really would like to do some Art journaling and I treid it more than once. But I don’t feel very comfortable putting my feelings, thoughts and emotions on a piece of paper. Maybe I will give it another try now.

Great podcast as usual! Actually my head is spinning with all the cool possibilities that this brings to mind. I bought a plain composition book recently as my regular spiral notebook is almost full. I can now see a very decorative future for that book.
Thank you for all that you do, you add a little to my life each day.

I haven’t journaled in about a year (last year of college, moving across the country, getting married, and going to france for two weeks- all in the last 10 months) but I am so inspired to get started again! I bet it will be just what I needed to find more balance in my life!

I knew almost nothing about art journaling before this podcast, and I am absolutely amazed by it now! I’m not a scrapbooker (one of the very few crafts I don’t do!), and I’d always linked art journaling with scrapbooking in my mind. This wonderful interview has made me realize that I’ve been walking on the cusp of art journaling for some time now. I keep what I call my “design notebook” in which I sketch, make lists, attach color samples, etc. for my knitting, quilting, sewing, etc. I also save clippings from fashion magazines, sales ads and home decor catalogues that inspire me. In addition to my design journal, I’ve also started keeping a “prayer journal” ever since I got a copy of “Bead One, Pray too” by Kimberly Winston (another fantastic interview of yours!), and I’ve been pasting in prayers that speak to me along with special scriptures and images that inspire me. Who knew I was already (almost) art journaling? I’d love to see Dawn’s book in person to see what others are doing in this medium I knew so little about before your interview!
Thanks for another spectacular episode!

How timely! I have an art journal all ready to pack with me to go on holiday to France. I have been dabbling with arty things all this year and made an altered book for my daughter as a special something for her getting into the uni of her choice. I scrapbooked as a child and am now returning to many of the crafts I loved. I have seen so many wonderful art journals which have been so inspiring. I look forward to listening to this podcast (I will have my ipod witih me on holiday!) and have just linked craftsanity in my blog. I have been travelling all over the UK of late and have downloaded all the archives and have been relishing my journeys home when I treat myself to a ‘listen’. Thank you for all you do for the crafting world!

Though I think this with each new episode, I think this is the best one yet! I LOVE art journaling, but I would like to make it more of a daily practice. Here is the link to the blog post I wrote after doing my first 2 journal pages last year: http://beadcircleblog.com/?p=116 I love that you talked about art journaling and scrapbooking in the same show. The lines between the 2 are starting to blur for me. Thanks so much for the podcast!

Love the podcast. I’ve thought of keeping a nature journal, but wanted to try my hand at bookbinding and making my own journal. Now I see I should just buy a notebook and go with it and hope the bookbinding will follow. (When I have loads of spare time.) And instead of just a nature journal, have a life journal that includes nature. After listening to the podcast I visited your guest’s website and added it to my list of blogs to visit that inspire me. Thank you for all your hard work in introducing us to a variety of inspiration.

I have dabbled in art journaling-I probably have 5-10 partially completed journals around the house. I find art journaling so much more fun than just written words that just ramble on and on. Looks like a super inspiring book! Thanks for another fab podcast.

It’s interesting that this is actually an artform. I guess you could call my work note pad an art journal. We all do, right? Sitting in a corporate meeting, doodling and daydreaming of other things we’d rather be doing, pretending to be taking notes on the company’s financial growth of the last quarter compared to the previous, blah blah blah.
Every meeting I flip to the last meeting’s notes and see my doodles and smile because it brings me back to that fun place I found during a rather dull time. I am now inspired to save them as a way to remember to daydream!
Another great episode. Thank you.

I have many journals with just one page filled out, but I clip things from magazines all the time and a journal probably be a good way to keep track of those.

I, too, loved Shimelle Laine’s Christmas art journal class – it’s definitely creeping into a lot of different things that I do, notably my scrapbooking, which now looks a lot “artier” than it used to. Thanks for such a great podcast! :)

Journaling is great for so many things. Even if a whole, articulate thought doesn’t materialize, it helps to have a place to put the pieces together and it’s a tool to help you get to where you want to be, or to make.

Both Dawn and YOU so inspiring. All my fears of rules, drawing well, what others may think are melting away after listening to this podcast.
I have never done a formal journal. I think back to all my high school and college notebooks and now in my planner at work, that I’ve doodled in the margins. I realize I have been creating a journal all along. Hmmm, I wish I still had those old notebooks to see what I was up to then.
Dawn said so many things that struck a cord with me that I think I will start journaling. One in thing in particular was about her brother that goes into his studio but doesn’t know what to work on. I have been there so many times. A journal may be an answer to that.
Thank you. Thank you. Keep up the great podcasts.

Thanks so much for interviewing Dawn. This has really inspired to get me back into it. It’s something I like to do (although have been a bit slack lately) to ‘pick up the gold dust’ in every day. ie, it helps me to record all of the great small stuff, and creative things and tiny ideas that happen every day, and helps me to remember that little tiny things can be incredibly satisfying. Also, it’s great to look back and remember all of those little things that made me so happy at the time. I’m pregnant right now, and it’s interesting how my journal has changed. The first few months my writing changed, and became very small and tight and crammed together (I think in reaction to fear and nervousness that it wouldn’t work out). Now that I’m further along in my pregnancy it has become more fluid and open again. It’s a very interesting tool in self discovery and awareness.
Thanks very much. Really enjoyed listening to this podcast.
