Laurie Sharp has a gift for turning bits and bobs of wool roving into animated sculptural pieces. From a knitting girl with her sheep to bumble bees and lady bugs and frogs, Laurie can draw people in with the whimsical needle felted sculptures she creates with repeated pokes with a barbed needle.
Just after the holidays I chatted with Laurie about Wool Pets, her needle felting kit business, her book “Wool Pets: Making 20 Figures with Wool Roving and a Barbed Needle” and the path that led her to pursue her creative dreams. So settle in with a project and prepare to be inspired by this 39-year-old artist who runs her Wool Pets business with her husband and photographer, Kevin Sharp, from their home in Suquamish, Wash. Kevin does all the great step-by-step photography for Laurie’s kits and also shot all the photos for the book. (What a great team!)

Thank you for the great podcast on needle felting! I have been trying to self-teach and have created a purse (need to try to wet felt to firm it up). I would love to try and make animals, hats, and embellishments for the hats too!

I love needle felting. I taught myself right before christmas this year and made all my family gifts. I love to make jewlery with it and I jave just felted a penguin and mushrooms that I sewed a jump ring on and place them on bracelets for my daughter.

I love needle felting on my girls jeans … but the turtle for me and the penguins for my 8 year old and maybe an owl for my 12 year old who loves Harry Potter.
