Color Your World With Jumbo Crayons Made From Melted Broken Crayons
We rounded up all the broken crayons in the house and melted them down last night to make some jumbo rainbow crayons. This project is easy and fun to do with kids.
If you want to make some of your own, here’s what you do:
1) Line an old muffin tin with cupcake wrappers and fill each about three quarters of the way with unwrapped, broken crayons. Mix up the colors as desired, or group like colors together.
2) Melt the crayons in a 250-degree oven until the wax melts. It will take about 15 minutes. I could have let these go a little longer, but we were cutting it close to bedtime.
3) Let the wax sit undisturbed until completely cool. Remove from tin and peel off the paper wrappers.

i’m so glad you showed that suggestion! I used to do this when i taught k/1st grades…recycle, reuse!!

I’m so glad to see you can use the paper liners with these! My boys and I made these a while back and I didn not enjoy getting the crayon residue off my muffin pan!

I have seen suggestions before for the basic idea of melting down crayons into new ones, but never this “cupcake” variation – it’s inspired! Those chunksters look like soooooooooo much fun to play with.
I really, really enjoy the CraftSanity podcast. It is so substantial, so full of insight and inspiration. It’s the audio equivalent of your jumbo crayons. :-)

I haven’t seen those since our kids were little! They make a great birthday gift for little friends, too: a few muffin crayons and a tablet/sketchpad in a drawstring bag made of a recycled something (shirt, bandana, etc.) or a scrap. What fun you and your Assistants have! Thankyou!

This is a great idea!
Here is my experience : make sure that your crayons are made of “almost only wax”. Our schools make us buy crayons that are made with wax and something else that appears to be plastic… They break less and are harder then usual crayons but they don’t melt like wax. I thought you’d like to know.

I just made some of these tonight after searching for a cheap, creative Christmas gift for my two little cousins! After I took mine out of the oven, I let them set up a bit on the counter. Then, only out of pure desperation (I wanted to try ‘em out!) I stuck them in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Plop! They came right out! I hope the kiddos like them… =)
