ArtPrize 2010: A Rag Rug Dress
I’m feeling rather fickle as I indulge in the visual feast that is ArtPrize. Each new piece I see becomes my favorite. I’m currently enamored with this “Rag Rug” dress created by Betsy Timmer that is on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM). The piece is made of found sheets, curtains and tablecloths that the artist braided and stitched by hand. The piece is impressive in size, measuring 98″ in diameter at the base and 64″ tall.
Timmer will be talking about her work at 7 p.m. Monday at the GRAM. Maybe I’ll see you there. Read more about “Rag Rug” here.
In the coming days I will be posting photos of the ArtPrize entries that captivate me in random order. ArtPrize is the international art competition held in Grand Rapids, Mich. More than 1,700 artists have entered and attendees vote to decide who goes home with the $250,000 top prize.

I just found your podcast and I listed to the interview with Betsy Timmer today. I found the interview to be entertaining and thoughtful. The dress is amazing and I love the idea that something so beautiful and creative was made from found material.
