@Sue Ellen, I think I'd challenge you on knitting being "pretty ordinary". I'd say quite the opposite in fact, especially when you consider the amount of different styles one can knit in.

I'd vote for crocheting. Seems to me knitting is pretty "ordinary", where crocheting is a bit of an art

You may have seen crocheted products in mall or in stores all over town. When you take a look at them for the first time you might say that they look quite complicated. But the truth is that a lot of people have them for a hobby. Once you learn about crocheting you will find it easy to get the hang of it afterwards just after a bit of practice.

Yes, Diane! I LOVE this idea, too. You folks are good. Thank you! This hat project is turning out to be way more inspiring than I imagined.

I already started knitting the top and I'm very pleased with the result. (I went with the popular vote!) However, I definitely want to try out the granny circle suggestion on the next hat. (I'm making new hats for the whole family.) Thanks for the inspiration, Duabe! I can't wait to try this out. Keep the great suggestions coming, everyone. I LOVE reading your comments.

I vote knitting, mostly because I only crochet and I would love to see the two combined. It's very pretty, Jen.

Maybe make a granny circle using the same colors of the squares and keep going in circles until it is wide enough to fit on top. Crochet the back loop for one round to "bend" the top and then slip stitch all together.

Hope this makes sense.
