CraftSanity Episode 110: Catching up with pattern maker and new author Meg McElwee
Meg McElwee’s star has risen fast since I first chatted with her on episode 80 and it’s great to have her back as part of her blog tour to fill us in on her life as a new mama and published craft book author. (Go, Meg!)
During our first chat, Meg was teaching at a Montessori school in Mexico and planning to return to the States to expand her pattern design business and start a family.
She’s now living in North Carolina with her husband and son and continuing to expand her pattern line which includes my favorite apron pattern of all time, the Emmeline. (That’s her studio pictured above.)
Her new book “Sew Liberated: 20 Stylish Projects for the Modern Sewist” is packed with fun projects that highlight the fantastic possibilities that come with incorporating easy applique techniques. The book comes with a packet of patterns glued inside the back over so you have everything you need to get started right away. Projects for the home, babies, children and you are include.
The Teacup Corset Apron, Funny Animals Children’s Totes and reverse appliqued Jersey Garden Skirt (cover photo) rank among my favorites patterns in the book, but I plan to try out several other patterns as time allows.
So settle in with a project and tune in to this week’s show to hear Meg’s story.

First, I wouldn’t mind having a studio as tidy as the one pictured. For next year I’d like to be doing more studio/design journaling and investigating free motion embroidery.

I flipped through this book at the book store and looooved the projects in it!
My goals for the coming year are to improve on my knitting skills, complete at least half of my project ideas, and (hopefully) open an etsy shop! Thanks!

Goals for 2010? Simply to become even more dedicated to handmade! I have made a good start this year but I know that I can do even better. Also to enjoy watching my little boy grow and discover more about the world!

Goals are revolving and ongoing and always changing but the one that continues to surface is, to become friends with my sewing machine; to use it in mixed media projects and to repurpose clothing and up-dating it in a fashion-funky-artsy way that expresses me.

Goals for 2010: Show all languishing craft projects the love, and bring them to a finish. Use and share my craft supply stash. Learn machine sewing. Get my blog up and running again as a writing outlet. Support handmade wherever possible. Dive into increasingly adventurous cooking. Start a vegetable garden. Stay fit and healthy. Love. Cultivate daily gratitude. Shine.
Congrats to Meg on her lovely book, and thanks to Jen for another wonderful and inspiring year of CraftSanity. Happy Holiday Season to all!

I love your podcast…again. Meg is wonderful, so inspiring.
My goal for 2010??? The biggest one is to help want-a-be sewest meet their goals, through encouragement, you-tube video how-tos, classes at the library and home, and our patterns/tutorials on the blog.

I’ve followed Meg’s blog and I’d love to win her book! I love the new Stitch too! I’ll speak to one goal right now for 2010, an actual finished knitted garment for me. I’m always knitting little things for babies and friends but I have yet to finish a knitted garment for me.

Ahh, crafting podcasts to keep me company while I scramble to finish the gift knitting and sewing! My primary goal for 2010 is to make a gift project a month throughout the year and avoid the panic. Another goal is to use up at least 75% of my yarn and fabric stash.

Let’s see … my goal for 2010 is to be still and enjoy life. Yes, I plan on adding projects to my list but this year I will make myself and my family a priority.

Keep up with the friends I’ve made in the crafting community since I’ve been blogging and hanging out on Ravelry. Hope you have a wonderful holiday Jennifer.

My Goals for 2010 include… getting the craft room in working order, setting aside time to be creative each day, paying off debt and cherishing all the moments with my Children as I teach them and watch them grow.
I have been a fan of Meg’s for a very long time. The first pattern I purchased from an online source was her reading pillow.

I recently found your podcast and have been listening to old episodes, I still have many to go through. Every single episode I’ve listened to has been inspiring. I’ve found that I have to keep a notebook next to me while listening to jot down ideas and inspirations. Really doesn’t work while driving! :)
My main goal for 2010 include getting my own business going so that by the end of 2010, I can no longer have an employer. My youngest is starting kindergarten this year and I want to be free to enjoy the afternoons after school with my kids. In terms of crafts, my goals for 2010 include doing more embroidery and learning to knit. I’ve been doing a lot of sewing recently so I’m looking for ways to add to my sewing projects.
Thanks for the podcast. It really is wonderful.

A couple of my creative goals this year are to dye up enough yarn for a sweater and try my own design for a project I have in mind. Other than that, I want to read more fiction. I am primarily a non-fiction reader (craft books included!!!), but want to branch out for a little escapism and inspiration of a different sort.
Happy Holidays!

I read meg’s blog and her book looks great! Enjoying the interview (listening to it now!)
I am hoping to post a list on our blog about my crafting goals. Short list is this:
1) Finish the quilts I started Dec 23 for my daughters to take to daycare ( they go back Jan 4!)
2) Finish the string quilt I struggled with in 2009.
3) Finish the tablerunner that is a late Christmas gift for my MIL
4) do more handsewing
AND …
work in more solids to lower costs and learn more about colour matching in my quilting, and reduce the fabric stash. Try to buy a bit less fabric and use what I have.
Thanks so much for the chance to win!

Hope I’m not too late {ugh, my procrastination!}…
For 2010, my goal is to reprioritize. I complain that there’s never enough time … but I’m thinking that there’s plenty of time and I’m just not being picky enough about how I spend it. So I’m planning on really reflecting on what’s most important to me (quality time with the kids/husband, crafting time, a comfortable home, fun & leisure) and pursuing those things rather than the other aspects of my life that have become overwhelming.
I’m also planning on running (um, maybe just jogging…) my first 5k in May. I’m really hoping that reenergizes the part of me that enjoys being active.

I have been working on living each day with gratitude for all of the abundance in my life. Of course I want to exercise more and eat right. Sew and create with what I have, make life a little more calm and organized. But start each day with a thought of all of the things I have to be thankful for. I want to stop wasting time and energy on what I want/need and to learn the difference between the two. I want to spend the next year sewing and crafting with what I have on hand and prove to my self that I already have what I want/need. I love Meg’s blog and her patterns but her book may put my want vs. need to a test!
