Crafting A New Life

It’s been a little over a week since I left my day job and I’m still working to settle into a routine. I wrote more during my first week as a freelance writer than I did during a typical work week in the office. So far it’s both challenging and wonderful to be crafting a new professional life for myself while spending my days at home with my girls.

I didn’t get much organizing done last week. So, today I started excavating the dining room and returning the last several weeks worth of project supplies to the shelves where they belong. Instead of packing away a half-finished rag rug, I decided to finish it this afternoon and put it to use. Amelia kept “testing it out” when I was trying to get a photo of it under the filtered evening sun. I waited to get a clear shot of the rug, only to find that I preferred the image of Amelia racing across it.

You can read the story I wrote about an the inspiring Beerhorst artist family and my related weekly art & craft column today on my GR Press blog. I recorded a podcast interview with the family, too. So stay tuned for that.

I like the photo with Amelia dancing across the rug in the sun. A carefree, joyful image of childhood.

You certainly work quick. Yesterday, a pot holder, today a whole rug. Watch out for tomorrow!

Congratulations on taking the plunge! As talented and creative as you are, I have no doubt you’ll have a bright future as a freelance writer and doing your crafty stuff. I’m glad you made the choice to spend more time with your girls. Way to go!

Good luck with your transition — it’s going to be so magical once you get organized, focused, into a routine blahblahblah. Keep your eye on the prize!

What a pretty rug! You may have posted about this before, but I’m new to your podcast and blog–do you have a book or a tutorial about making these?

Thanks! And good luck on your new ventures. I’m a teacher considering making a similar move so I get to vicariously live through you for now. :-)

I love the picture! They grow up way too fast and we always try to get them to pose being nice children. We start a tradition, we take the nice pictures then they get to funny and wacky pictures. Gives them a reason to behave. I’ve found those are my favorite ones!

Good luck with the changes in life. You have made the best move for you and Amelia!

What a great rug! I’ve always wanted to do a Sewing Project like this. How long did it take?
