CraftSanity Episode 88: A Conversation With Amy Butler

amy.jpgLike many of us pursuing our own creative dreams, Amy Butler built her business one small step at a time. She designed and stitched and designed some more and before long fabric lovers across the country knew her name.

On this episode of CraftSanity, designer Amy, 42, of Grandville, Ohio, takes us back to her creative roots and shares her story, one sure to inspire those of you working to build a creative business of your own.

amyloot.jpgWin Amy Butler Prizes! Not long after our chat, Amy sent me a massive box of goodies to give away to CraftSanity listeners, so comment away folks. Leave a comment about episode 88 below this post to enter to win the drawing for one of several Amy Butler prizes. From now until Nov. 15 I will be giving away fabric stacks, patterns and copies of “Amy Butler’s Little Stitches for little ones: 20 Keepsake Sewing Projects For Baby and Mom,” so check back often to see if you won.

Perfect timing! I’ll be listening to this one today – first, I need to work for a few hours, but I know that the interview and some sewing time will be waiting for me at the end. It’s just the kind of big treat I needed to get me into gear!

Looking forward to finding some kid-free time to listen to this. I love my In Stitches book and other bag patterns of Amy’s that I’ve used. Even tho it can be difficult to source her fabric in New Zealand it is well worth the effort to complete the look!

Thanks for a great interview! I am so appreciative of your work, Jennifer. The info was fascinating, and Amy’s voice captivated my son as he played with toys throughout the podcast. You sparked both of our creativity/ies. Thank you. Oh, and I recently made a yoga bag (pattern from Amy’s website) and it was a success, one of my first pattern-following experiences. I’d recommend it.

oh good–i’m not the only one who hasn’t listened yet–i’m going to wait until the kids are napping tomorrow, open up my sewing machine and quilt and listen at the same time–what a treat! a few years ago, i bought a bundle of beautiful fat quarters (at that time, i was really frugal and rarely bought fabric that wasn’t on sale), stashed it away, and just last year, when looking through my stuff, found it again–and realized those FQs were Amy Butler’s Temple Flowers–i had bought “name brand” fabric without even knowing it–i just thought they were lovely. they are now made into a baby quilt for my niece :-)

Just before heading out for a walk today with my 4 month old I checked my computer and told my husband “hooray, this is going to be a great Craftsanity”. I told him it was an interview with Amy Butler and asked if he knew who that was. He did! And he is not crafty but countless times has heard me mention her, has seen her fabrics that I buy, and has observed me pointing out other people wearing things made with her fabric. Anyway, it was a great interview-thanks to Jennifer and Amy! I’m crossing my fingers for goodies.

I’m so excited about this podcast! I’m downloading as I type & then I’m off to run and listen. I found your site about 2 weeks ago and I have been making my way through the podcasts with my runs. They are so inspiring, and their length is usually just perfect for a 7/8 miler with cool-down.
I am a growing Butler fan, even though her fabric is impossibly expensive here in France. I have a brand new baby niece born in Michigan last week! I really want to make her some more goodies…wouldn’t a little gift from Amy Butler be cool to help me do that?!
Thanks for everything you do – your podcasts really make me feel like I’m hanging out with friends over a cup of tea.

I find Amy Butler’s designs really intruiging. They look so fresh and modern and are the opposite of fussy. I love her bold, chunky patterns.

She always seemed like a trail blazer to me, but since listening to the podcast I’ve been thinking how down to earth and practical she is. It was a great show and over far too quickly!

Jennifer,
Your interview with Amy Butler was great. I found your podcast just a few months ago on a recommendation from Felted Purse designer Sharon Dreifus (aka Sheknits Podcast). Your podcast is very motivational in expanding my creativity. I, like so many, enjoy the talents of Amy Butler. A couple of years ago I made a dozen of “Humbug Bags” to be donated to patients in a local hospital from some wonderful fabric that I later found out was one of Amy’s designs. Her designs make my heart happy. Thanks again for a wonderful podcast. I always enjoy them

Like everyone, I love Amy Butler and her fabrics :) I am a quilter/sewer/knitter/crocheter and have used Amy’s fabrics to make a pretty cool tote bag and quilt. I’ve met her at the Stitchin’ Post in Sisters, Oregon and she is just as great in person as she was on your podcast. Thanks!

Hey! This was the first time I’ve listened to the podcast and I’ve got to say, I really dug it. I’m new to sewing/quilting, but love Amy’s stuff. So I thought it was really cool to hear her talk about her creative process, the (mostly unexpectd) path she took to get there, and how she tries to stay on top all of her projects. I agree wtih T2 that her thoughts on copywrite and etsy/etc. were really illuminating.
Also awesome: I totally can’t wait for the line of bed linens. YUMMY!

About 3months ago I discovered your podcast and of course preceded to download every episode and I’ve been working my way through them both from the beginning and the end. Amy Butler — what can I add that hasn’t been said? Great patterns, great fabrics and now we learn from you, great person! I love her can-do attitude and the healthy dose of realism she lives with. The best part of the interview was where she talked about deciding on her first job.

I have a few of her patterns which while they are not “high fashion” ala the big four pattern companies are nevertheless very wearable, timeless and practical. Her bags are great.

By the way, I recently downloaded all the old episodes via itunes. As I’ve been working my way through them, I’ve really noticed how you’ve found your voice and your niche. I enjoyed the first shows, too, that you seem to make excuses for–they are so genuine in a really cool Wayne-and-Garth in the basement making their cable tv show way. I totally mean that as a compliment. I like the aftershow as much as I like the interview.

Keep up the good work and keep your own wonderful spirit in you shows!! You rock!
