Free-Motion Quilting: My First Attempt

machinequilted.jpg

So I’m machine quilting now. I decided to go for a completely random pattern to take the pressure off. So far it’s going okay. I’m amazed how physical this part of the project is. Managing the weight of the quilt while trying to move it under the needle as evenly as possible is a bit of a challenge, but I think I’m starting to get it. I’d love to stay up all night to finish this project, but I must sleep. Let me know what you guys think about binding options. I haven’t settled on a color yet. Cheers! – JAH

I can’t wait until I’m safely through this part and deciding what color binding to sew on.

You are doing great! I know it is hard, but it is fun, too! About the binding, you used all different sashings for the blocks, right? You can use all of the same fabrics in the binding. It doesn’t have to be just one fabric………..just a thought……..

I love it! I keep showing pictures of your quilt to my 5 year old boy and trying to get him to draw things for me to embroider. :) He’s not that into drawing so far.

I second the idea of using the sashing fabrics for a pieced binding. It’s a bit more work than a single fabric, but I think it would be so cool. I’d cut the pieces in various lengths and have at it!

Your free motion quilting looks great! Keep at it. It does get easier and less physically exhausting I promise! Great use of your daughters art!

I only started listening to your podcasts a few weeks ago and they are so inspiring. Thank you for your hard work producing them. I look forward to following your blog!

Unless this is a surprise for your daughter, why not ask her. I have a feeling that she would love and cherish your beautiful and heartfelt gift just that much more.

You are doing such a good job. I’m too afraid to even quilt with a machine let alone try free motion quilting.

I like doing multiple fabric bindings, too – it always looks great. Or how about a stripey binding? It’s fun to cut it so that the stripes run the short way across the binding, and if you’ve used lots of colours in the quilt, it can be even more fun to have a candy-striped binding. Enjoy!

It looks wonderful! I love the whimsey of the random quilting with the zany monsters. You are doing a great job! Eat your Wheaties (or something) to keep up your strength – I bet it is physical to move that big thing around!
