CraftSanity Episode 75: Artist Emily Martin gives us a tour “Inside a Black Apple”

emily.jpg

This week you’re going to hear the voice of Emily Martin, the 25-year-old Georgia artist and craft powerhouse who sells her prints, paper goods, dolls and other craft wares over at The Black Apple.

On this episode of CraftSanity, Emily talks candidly about the ups and downs of running a successful online craft business and false assumptions some have made given her “top seller” status over at Etsy.

Tune in for the story of how she built one of the most popular art shops on the web in about three years, and maybe even pick up a few tips on how you can make your own crafty dreams come true.

Still want more? Check out Emily’s “Inside a Black Apple” blog and read her “Some Girls Wander By Mistake” fashion blog.

doll.jpgWatch Emily on the Martha show and download the super cute doll pattern that she let Martha post on her site. It was cool of Emily to give this design away for free, so enjoy making dolls for personal use or gifts. But don’t be poser and whip up and extra 10 for your etsy show because it’s just not cool to profit off of her design. Thanks for the free pattern, Emily. You rock!

blackapplebookplates_blog.jpg

And because Emily apparently can’t stop giving, be sure to download the pdf of these rad bookplates and paste them into all your favorite craft books. Enjoy, folks. (Thanks again, Emily.)

Oh.
This.
Is one of the best.
Podcasts.
EVER.

Isn’t that Emily erudite, articulate, and fun? And Jennifer, you always are, anyway; that’s a given.

WHAT happens to people? I’d had this horrible, sinking feeling when Martha made her comments on Emily’s segment, and asked Emily about $$, it was horrifying, and now I can see that I didn’t even know the half of it!

But people are responsible for their own behaviors, and they were WAY out of line with regard to what they put on Emily as a result. People need to have some BOUNDARIES for heaven’s sake! And a bit of REALITY, here. It’s none of anyone’s (even Martha’s) business what Emily’s doing, and it’s Emily’s brilliance and HER hard work, and HER dues to pay! Everyone needs to just get their own lives!

Sometimes the feast on celebrity in this country is just too much to take. Just mind your own stores, people!!

That having been said, I’m going to go ask Emily for her autograph.

Loved the interview. I stumbled upon Emily about five months ago through sublime stitching and fell in love with her work. She has such a cute blog and great vintage style. It is nice to hear that someone can be successful by doing what they love.

I’ve been listening to your podcast since November (and am getting caught up on all of the podcasts since before then) and I have to say Emily Martin is your best interview yet.

She seems like a really cool girl; very grounded and realistic. She has a great sense of humor, and your rapport with her was great.

Great work!

What a lovely interview! I’ve been incredibly inspired by Emily and her work for some time, and I was so excited to listen to your podcast. I’m amazed by this small phenomenon she has created through the Black Apple and I think she is so deserving of the credit she has received. Living the dream, I say!! Thanks so much for yet another captivating interview!

Jennifer,
Thanks for another great show. It was awesome to hear Emily’s story and her perspective. What I loved is that she didn’t sugar coat her experience nor did she sound bitter in any way. Just the facts and let the listener decide…
Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Emily, for being so candid with us. I even laughed out loud when you all joked about jumping in your money 60% and then having to shovel it back in your closet! Congrats to you both!
